Research

Faculty at the National Center for Smart Growth and staff from affiliated schools have produced a large body of research focusing on the diverse dimensions of Smart Growth, including its relationships to the environment, to transportation and public health, to issues of housing and community development as well as international development issues. In addition, the National Center has launched several projects related to Smart Growth education and outreach.

Researchers on the staff of the Center have been particularly active on projects involving land use monitoring and quantitative analysis; the relationship between the built environment and public health; and, the effects of massive urbanization in the People’s Republic of China.

Dr. Gerrit Knaap, the Center’s Executive Director, and Research Associate Jungyul Song are conducting research into future land development capacity within the state of Maryland. He is also working on land monitoring projects for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in several locations around the United States.

Dr. Reid Ewing has recently garnered national and even international attention with a report linking the built environment to public health problems such as obesity. Stories about his report, Measuring the Health Effects of Sprawl: A National Analysis of Physical Activity, Obesity and Chronic Disease, have appeared in major newspapers throughout the nation and internationally. Dr. Ewing has also been interviewed about the research on most major television networks, National Public Radio and other outlets. His latest research (Travel and Environmental Implications of School Siting) focuses on the relationship between school location, the built environment around schools, mode choices for trips to school, and air emissions impacts of those choices.

Dr. Chengri Ding is working on a variety of projects related to the massive trends toward urbanization being experienced in the People’s Republic of China. Among other work, Dr. Ding is working on projects designed to demonstrate the value of redesigning China’s land polices and land management program as a means of more effectively managing land use in response to recent urbanization trends.
