In Fall 2017, the Provost awarded the National Center for Smart Growth (NCSG) and the iSchool a grant to launch a two-year initiative to develop an institutional framework for research, education, and engagement in smart cities and urban analytics at the University of Maryland. This initiative will use the Baltimore Avenue Corridor as a smart cities lab and will focus on applying smart cities technologies to the critical needs and opportunities facing the Baltimore Avenue Corridor, including Public Safety and Health, Smart Mobility, Environmental Sustainability, and Economic Innovation. In addition, we will identify research opportunities around the planning, installation, and use of the smart cities technology. The smart cities technology and associated research will be interdisciplinary and trans-sectoral, engaging multiple campus units and governmental, civic, and private sector organizations. The deliverables of the project will focus on Research Capacity Building, Curriculum Development, and Public Engagement.
